SPORTS MASSAGE

 


Sports Massage is one of the fastest growing fields in massage.  Learn to prepare athletes, dancers, and physically active individuals for performance and competition, study methods for increasing flexibility and Range of Motion (ROM), and learn how to maximize the body's potential between training and work out regimes.  The basic principles and techniques of stretching, flexibility, body mobilization techniques (BMT), and Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) will be taught.  Using these techniques, students will learn to practice basic pre-event and post-event massage as well as learn the basics behind sports maintenance massage.

 

 This course is comprised of five, six hour classes, with a total of 36 hours of CEU credits.

COURSE TOPICS AND INFORMATION

 

36 CE hours

 

Topics Covered:

 

Principles of Sports Massage: Students will be taught the basic principles of Sports Massage and an advanced understanding of muscle structure, physiology, andmovement. Muscle soreness and stiffness, and overuse and repetitive strain will also be discussed.

 

BMT & ROM:  Range of Motion (ROM), and Body Mobilization Techniques (BMTs) will be taught and how to be utilized on different types of bodies inmultiple situations. We will cover BMTs for the legs, arms, hips, shoulders, and neck.

 

Stretching & Flexibility:  The basic principles of muscle palpation, stretching, and flexibility will be introduced and the proper way to stretch various muscles and muscle groups will be demonstrated and practiced at length.  Primary muscles to be discussed and stretched are: Erectors, QL, TFL, Psoas, Quads, Hamstrings, Short/Long Adductors, Hip Rotators, Gastroc, Soleus, Anterior Tibialis, Biceps, Triceps, Shoulder Rotation, and Forearm Extensors and Flexors.

 

Advanced Stretching & Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF):  Once students have mastered the basics of stretching and flexibility, we will expand our understanding of stretch, flexibility, and ROM by investigating GTO and Muscle Spindle function. We will also learn the basic fundamentals of three simple PNF techniques: Tense/Relax, Reciprocal Inhibition, and CRAC.  Primary muscles to be discussed and stretched are: Erectors, QL, TFL, Psoas, Quads, Hamstrings, Short/Long Adductors, Hip Rotators,Gastroc, Soleus, Anterior Tibialis, Biceps, Triceps, Shoulder Rotation, and Forearm Extensors and Flexors.

 

Sports Pre-Event, Sports Post-Event, and Sports Maintenance Massage:  As students gain confidence with the movements and stretches learned in class, the basic principles of Pre-Event Sports Massage , Post-Event Sports Massage, and Maintenance Massage will be discussed and learned.  Students will learn to perform basic Pre-Event Sports Massage and Post-Event Sports Massage by using the movements and stretches learned in class and if time permitted will practice a full length 90 minute Sports Maintenance Massage.

 

What to Bring to Class:  FLAT Sheet size Full or Double, loose comfortable clothing, sweats, t-shirts, No Jeans, dresses, skirts, or tight fitting clothing.  Optional:  Bolster.
